Why this matters now

Workplace bereavement support is becoming a leadership and policy priority.

Grief can affect concentration, confidence, attendance, communication and the return to work experience. Acas also encourages employers to use clear policies, flexible support and empathetic manager conversations.

The legal landscape is moving too. That makes now the right time to review policy, prepare managers and strengthen organisational practice.

NOW

Existing bereavement related rights already matter.

Employees can have a right to reasonable time off for emergencies involving a dependant. Eligible parents can also take statutory Parental Bereavement Leave after the death of a child under 18 or a stillbirth after 24 weeks.

2026

Further protections have already entered the workplace landscape.

Government implementation changes from April 2026 include Bereaved Partners' Paternity Leave in specified circumstances.

2027

Wider bereavement leave is scheduled to take effect.

The Government timetable includes bereavement leave covering wider losses, including pregnancy loss. Final operational details remain subject to regulations and guidance.

Legislative context checked August 2026. See GOV.UK , time off for dependants , the Employment Rights Act timeline , and Acas guidance .

The G R I E F at Work approach

Professional in structure. Human at heart.

Bereavement cannot be reduced to a checklist. Our approach combines organisational clarity with the understanding that every person and every experience of grief is different.

Our philosophy
Preparation is not about making grief predictable. It is about making your response more thoughtful when the unpredictable happens. Jaqui

G R I E F at Work helps organisations create the confidence, structure and compassion needed to respond well when employees face loss.

01

Human

Grief is individual. Support should recognise different experiences, relationships, cultures and personal circumstances.

02

Practical

Managers need clear actions, useful language, appropriate boundaries and confidence in what to do next.

03

Consistent

Policies and workplace practice should reduce unnecessary uncertainty while allowing appropriate flexibility.

04

Forward looking

Employers should prepare for changing expectations and emerging bereavement rights before implementation pressures arrive.

G
Compassion and professionalism can work together. The strongest workplace response respects the person, supports the manager and gives the organisation a clear framework for action.
G R I E F at Work
